Partnering on Social Media
By Nicholas Garlow
With more than 300 social media accounts scattered across the Department of Health and Human Services, it can go without saying that connecting with all those managers to produce unified campaigns and messages can be tricky.
That’s why the HHS Center for New Media maintains a social media database of these accounts; a sort of HHS social “hub” to list all the contacts for platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and many others.
Part of the mission of the HHS Center for New Media is to connect others who are doing great things. I’m challenging myself and the HHS Center for New Media, and all HHS social media gurus to better coordinate our efforts. There a number of steps we can take to accomplish this.
Make better use of existing networks and learn who else is doing similar work. HHS has set up an internal network on Facebook to collaborate on social media efforts and ideas. We hold monthly calls on new media. If you see offices or accounts that have a similar mission, set up working groups and editorial boards to share content and resources.

Make connections wherever and whenever you can, because you never know when those connections are going to come in handy. Let’s take Hurricane #Isaac as one example. The storm became category 1 around noon on Tuesday, August 28. I emailed the HHS New Media ListServ, asking what information and social media resources people had on preparedness. The response was immediate, and we learned that there were multiple channels to leverage and promote in the emergency. I consolidated the best information and sent a follow-up to the list. Agencies from across the federal government shared resources – all in an effort to reach the public with the best information.
Take a moment to browse through our social media database. If you see an account you want to partner with, go for it! If you’re account is not listed, contact us with some basic information about the account and we’ll have it added. Our job is to make sure you have the resources and tools to succeed. We’re here to connect you with others. If you have ideas on how we can do that best, or have questions on how to connect with others, let us know.
